How to read a Purple Star chart
Zi Wei Dou Shu — Purple Star Astrology — looks harder than it is. Under the hundred stars sits one repeatable method: five steps, applied in order, the same way the imperial court's astrologers applied them for a thousand years. This page teaches you the method with an interactive palace wheel, a fully worked example, practice drills, and a final exam. It reads the same sky that names your Zodi Animal — but where the animal names your nature, the chart maps your whole court.

The five-step method
Every Purple Star chart, no matter whose, is the same machine: twelve palaces arranged in a ring, fourteen major stars distributed among them at birth, and four forces — keyed to your birth-year stem — that heat, empower, polish, or hook specific stars. A reading is never a mystical impression. It is a sequence of lookups, each one checkable, which is exactly why it can be taught.
Beginners fail in one predictable way: they read a palace in isolation. The court never works alone. Every palace is judged with its Palace Triangle — itself, the palace directly opposite, and the two palaces a third of the wheel away. Learn to see triangles instead of rooms and you are already reading like the court.
Anchor the Command Palace
Find 命宮 Ming Gong — set by birth month and hour. Every other palace takes its position from this anchor. It is the throne room of the whole chart.
Identify the star cast
Note which of the 14 major stars sit in the Command Palace and how bright they are — Temple, Thriving, Favorable, or Fallen. An empty palace borrows the stars opposite.
Read the Palace Triangle
Judge the palace with its opposite and its two trine partners. For the Command Palace that always means Wealth, Career, and Travel — your life's working coalition.
Apply the Four Forces
Your birth-year stem sends the Flow 祿, the Power 權, the Shine 科, and the Hook 忌 to four specific stars. Wherever the Hook lands is the life lesson.
Time it with Decade Doors
Each palace hosts a ten-year chapter. Find the door open at your current age, then layer the Year Wave over it. Character first, calendar second.

Worked example: Mei, born 1996
Meet Mei — born in 1996, a Fire Rat year (丙子 Bǐng Zǐ), with her Command Palace landing in the Horse branch 午. Her chart is the classic Zi Wei in Wu arrangement: the Emperor Star sits alone on the throne. Every claim below follows from the five steps — open them in order and watch the method work. (A real casting also uses the lunar month, day, and hour; Mei's is pre-cast so you can focus on reading, not arithmetic. When you want your own, start with your animal or cast the sister system at the BaZi chart caster.)
Mei's Command Palace sits in the 午 Wu (Horse) branch, and the star stationed there is 紫微 Zi Wei itself — the Emperor Star, in Temple brightness. Zi Wei in Wu is its strongest seat: this is a person built to organize, preside, and carry responsibility, with an emperor's allergy to being managed.
Ring the wheel (flip on Mei's stars above) and the court assembles: Wu Qu, the Finance General with Tian Xiang, the Prime Minister in her Wealth palace; Lian Zhen, the Diplomat with Tian Fu, the Treasury in Career; Tan Lang, the Desire Star across from her in Travel. Two palaces — Property and Parents — are empty and borrow the stars opposite, a rule you'll drill below.
The Command Palace is judged with Wealth (寅), Career (戌), and its opposite, Travel (子). Mei's triangle assembles the famous 紫府武相 pattern — Emperor, Treasury, Finance General, Prime Minister all in one coalition, with the Desire Star facing the throne. Classical texts rank this among the strongest structural patterns: authority backed by money sense, ambition pulling from the opposite seat.
1996 is a 丙 Bing year, so the forces fly to fixed stars: the Flow 祿 → Tian Tong (her Health palace: resilience, ease of recovery), the Power 權 → Tian Ji (Siblings: she commands her peer circle), the Shine 科 → Wen Chang (an auxiliary scholar star — recognition through writing and credentials), and crucially the Hook 忌 → Lian Zhen, sitting in her Career palace.
Mei's chart runs a Fire Bureau, so her first Decade Door opened at age 6, and as a yang-year woman her doors advance toward the Siblings palace: ages 26–35 put her inside the Marriage door — where Qi Sha, the Warrior, is stationed. And the Fire Horse year 2026 plants the Year Wave in the 午 Wu branch — directly on her Command Palace.
The full reading, one paragraph
Mei is an executive chart — Emperor enthroned in Temple, funded by a Finance-General wealth palace, staffed by a Diplomat-Treasury career house. Her structural gift is authority that pays; her structural lesson is the Hook in Career: politics, image, and entanglement at work will re-test her each cycle until she manages them deliberately. The 26–35 door makes marriage the proving ground, and 2026's Year Wave over her throne makes this the year she is seen. That is the five-step method: anchor, cast, triangle, forces, timing — every sentence traceable to a rule you now know.

Decade Doors & the Year Wave
Purple Star Astrology's sharpest edge over most systems is timing. The natal chart never changes — but attention moves through it. Each palace hosts a Decade Door 大限, a ten-year chapter in which that palace's stars set the theme of your life. Which door opens first, and at what age, depends on your chart's Five-Element Bureau; whether the doors advance clockwise or counterclockwise depends on your birth-year polarity and gender — one more reason the same twelve rooms produce millions of different lives.
Over the decades ride the Year Waves 流年: each lunar year animates one branch of the wheel. Wherever this year's branch falls in your chart is the palace under the spotlight. That is how a reader answers "why now?" — the decade sets the chapter, the year turns the page.
Walk Mei's doors
Enter an age and the wheel of doors below shows which chapter Mei is living. (Fire Bureau: first door at 6, advancing toward Siblings — the counterclockwise path of a yang-year woman.)

Glossary of the court
- The Command Palace 命宮 Ming Gong
- The anchor palace of self — identity, life force, the throne room from which the other eleven take position.
- The Palace Triangle 三方四正 San Fang Si Zheng
- A palace judged with its opposite and its two trine partners. The minimum honest unit of any reading.
- The Four Forces 四化 Si Hua
- Flow 祿, Power 權, Shine 科, Hook 忌 — four charges your birth-year stem clips onto four specific stars.
- The Hook 化忌 Hua Ji
- The force of obstruction and obsession. Not a curse — a syllabus. Its palace is where life repeats the lesson until learned.
- The Decade Door 大限 Da Xian
- The ten-year chapter each palace hosts in turn. Sets the theme; the Year Wave turns the pages inside it.
- The Year Wave 流年 Liu Nian
- The palace animated by the current lunar year's branch — the room under this year's spotlight.
- Temple & Fallen 廟 · 陷
- Brightness levels. A star in Temple speaks with full authority; Fallen, its shadow traits lead. Same star, different volume.
- Borrowed stars 借星
- An empty palace is never blank — it borrows the stars of its opposite palace and reads them at reduced strength.
- The Vanguard Trio 殺破狼 Sha Po Lang
- Qi Sha, Po Jun, Tan Lang — always locked in one triangle. Charts they anchor run on change, risk, and reinvention.
- The Bureau 五行局
- The chart's five-element class (Water 2 to Fire 6) — it sets the age at which your first Decade Door opens.
Questions every new reader asks
FAQ
Is Purple Star Astrology the same thing as Zi Wei Dou Shu?
Yes — one system, two names. 紫微斗數 Zǐwēi Dǒushù translates roughly as "Purple Star Dipper Calculation," and English writers shortened it to Purple Star Astrology. The purple star itself is Zi Wei, the pole star, Emperor of the sky's court. Read the full story on the history page.
Do I need my exact birth time?
For your own chart, yes — the Command Palace is anchored by the two-hour branch of birth, so hour changes everything. To learn the method, you don't: every module on this page runs on Mei's pre-cast chart.
How is this different from BaZi?
BaZi weighs the five elements in eight characters — superb for temperament and strategy. Purple Star maps twelve life domains with named star-characters — superb for specifics and timing. They are sister arts from the same calendar; serious readers cast both. Start at the BaZi hub.
Can I really learn this without reading Chinese?
Yes. Every term on this site travels with its characters, pinyin, and a plain-English name — you absorb the real vocabulary while reading everything in English. By the exam you will know 命宮 on sight.
