八宅, eight mansions
Your Kua Number
The classical method for a person's favorable directions, from birth year and sex.

Calculate your Kua number
Enter a date of birth. The Kua uses the solar year that begins at the start of spring, 立春, so a birthday before early February counts as the year before. Nothing is sent anywhere; this runs in your browser.
The traditional Eight Mansions formula uses birth year and sex; some lineages read it differently, and it is one school among several.
The groups
East and West
Your Kua number, 命卦, places you in the East group, 東四命, with Kua 1, 3, 4, 9 and favorable directions north, south, east, and southeast; or the West group, 西四命, with Kua 2, 6, 7, 8 and favorable directions west, northwest, southwest, and northeast. The Kua uses the Chinese solar year that begins at the start of spring, 立春, so a birthday before early February uses the previous year, the same boundary our engine already handles.
Using it
Face a good direction
Everyone has four favorable directions, named 生氣, the strongest; 天醫, the heavenly doctor, a category name and not medical advice; 延年, for steadiness; and 伏位, for a settled foundation. Face one where it counts: the head of the bed, the seat at a desk, the way a main door faces. Schools differ on facing a direction versus pointing the head toward it, and Eight Mansions is one school among several.
