辦公室風水, the office arranged

Office Feng Shui

You open the door on a room that can carry you. Office feng shui is the old art of arranging a workspace so the day gathers behind you instead of rushing past. Walk the nine steps below, seat by seat, and learn the commanding position by feel.

Start here

A learning path, not a promise

This is a nine-step learning path through your own office, built around one idea the whole tradition returns to: where you sit decides how the room works on you. You lay out your desk, you read how well the seat sits in command, and you take each fix in turn. It is intention and care, offered for reflection, never a guarantee of any outcome.

命位 at work

The desk in command

Lay out your workspace and read how the desk sits in the commanding position, 命位 (mìng wèi). The aim is to see the door without sitting in its line, keep a solid wall behind the chair as the Black Tortoise, 玄武 (xuán wǔ), the mountain that gives backing, and leave the bright hall, 明堂 (míng táng), open ahead.

  • Sit so you can see the door without facing straight down its line.
  • Keep a solid wall behind the chair, the Black Tortoise, 玄武; a high solid-backed chair stands in where a wall cannot.
  • Avoid a window directly behind the seat; glass at your back is asked to be a wall.
  • Keep a moving walkway or a window in front of you, not at your shoulder.
  • Move clear of an overhead beam, 橫樑壓頂 (héng liáng yā dǐng), and out of a mirror's reflection line.

Symbolic cultural guidance, meaning not prediction. Not a promise of any outcome.

The centerpiece

Diagnose your desk

The diagnostic below is the heart of the path. Drag your desk on the grid, and it scores the seat from zero to a hundred against the classic cautions: see the door without sitting in its line, a solid wall behind the chair as the Black Tortoise, 玄武, and a clear bright hall, 明堂, ahead. Every flag names the traditional fix. The reading runs in full in your browser; nothing is sent anywhere.

The nine steps

Walk the office, seat by seat

1. Back to the door

The door is the mouth of qi, and the seat that cannot read it is the one tradition warns against. Learn method one.

2. The walkway window

A desk pressed to a busy window takes in every passing footstep. Learn method two.

3. A window behind you

Glass cannot be a mountain, so the open back loses its backing. Learn method three.

4. Solid backing

The positive core: a solid wall behind the chair, the mountain that steadies you. Learn method four.

5. Desk and colors

Read the desk by its five-phase color and a shape that curves to embrace you. Learn method five.

6. Mirror glare

A mirror that keeps answering you at the desk is named light-sha. Learn method six.

7. The overhead beam

A beam pressing the crown reads as a weight you keep forgetting is there. Learn method seven.

8. Peach-blossom direction

Your own animal's direction for warmth and social ease, with a vase of fresh flowers. Learn method eight.

9. Wealth objects

The figures of fortune and which way each one faces. Learn method nine.

The tie-in

Your animal at the desk

Every seat on this path is the commanding position your Primal Animal is already given in its Habitat. Your year animal is a compass direction, your element sets the desk colors, and your Kua names the walls that are truly yours. Start at feng shui and your animal, or place the desk yourself in the commanding position.

The field guide

The Commanding Seat, in one book

The Commanding Seat: Nine Ways to Arrange an Office the Feng Shui Way gathers this whole path into one giftable field guide. It carries all nine methods, the philosophy and Chinese culture underneath them, from qi, 氣, to the mountain-and-water, 山環水抱, form the seat is built on, and a twelve-animal peach-blossom, 桃花位, appendix with a plate for every branch. It is meaning, not prediction, and it credits the tradition it comes from. Try the commanding position.

A fuller version, with all twelve animals, the wealth map, and your own office diagnostic saved, arrives with free accounts, opening soon.
