The phase of depth and wisdom

Water

shuǐ · north · winter · the virtue 智 zhì, wisdom

Water is the phase that moistens and descends, 潤下 (rùn xià). It stores itself through winter, finds the low place, and knows by going deep rather than by force. In Chinese thought Water is not one thing: it is a great ocean and a single raindrop at once. Meet both below.

The centrepiece · 壬 and 癸

The two waters

Every phase has a yang face and a yin face. For Water they even carry their own names: 壬 the great water and 癸 the small water. Tap one.

Where Water sits on the wheel

Water never stands alone

Water is fed by one phase, feeds another, holds a third in check, and is held by a fourth. Follow any thread to that phase.

Up to the wheel, down to your animal

Water is a thread. Your animal is where it lands.

Up to the five phases

Water is one turn of a larger wheel. Step back and watch all five feed and check each other.

Down to your animal

Rat carries yang water, Pig carries yin water, and any birth year can add Water on top. Find yours.

Meaning, not prediction. The Water material here, including the 壬 and 癸 temperaments and the BaZi and TCM notes, is symbolic character-lore and classical tradition drawn from Chinese metaphysics. It is a lens for reflection, not a claim of fact about anyone's health, wealth, or fate. Correspondences vary by lineage. See how Water lines up across traditions.
