Earth in the body

Spleen and intellect

In classical Chinese medicine, Earth governs the Spleen (脾) and Stomach (胃). Together they are called the root of postnatal life, the source from which the body makes its qi and blood.

Transformation and nourishing

The Spleen is classically said to govern transformation and transportation 运化 of food and fluids, to be the root of postnatal qi and blood 气血生化之源, to govern the muscles and flesh 肌肉 and the four limbs, to open to the mouth 口 and show in the lips, and to keep the blood in the vessels 统血. Good appetite and steady energy are described as the sign of a settled Spleen.

Overthinking, and the intellect

Earth carries the emotion pensiveness and overthinking 思 (sī) and houses the intellect or intention 意 (yì). The classics warn that overthinking harms the Spleen, 思伤脾, and that worry knots the qi, 思则气结. The Spleen and Stomach are the postnatal root 后天之本, the counterpart to the Kidney's prenatal root.

Classical system, not medicine. This describes a traditional medical-philosophical framework and cultural tradition. It is not medical advice, diagnosis, or treatment, and nothing here heals or balances anything as fact.
