Earth in your space

feng shui

In feng shui, Earth belongs to the centre 中宫 and to the southwest, the 坤 (kūn) trigram, Earth, and the northeast, the 艮 (gèn) trigram, Mountain. It is carried by yellows, browns, and terracotta, by flat, square, and low shapes, and by ceramics, clay, brick, and stone.

Placing Earth

To strengthen Earth in a room, add its source, Fire. To calm an excess of Earth, let it drain into Metal or loosen it with Wood. Square earthy forms, yellow and brown tones, and stone or crystals are the usual carriers, placed to invite grounding and stability.

The honest note

Classically the centre is tied to health and grounding, the southwest to love, marriage, and the matriarch, and the northeast to knowledge and self-cultivation. Some modern systems stretch earth and crystals into promises of wealth or a partner. Treat the classical associations as symbolic and the guaranteed-outcome versions as modern popularisation, not law. A stone is traditionally intended to invite steadiness, and nothing more is promised.
