What feng shui is
風水 (fēng shuǐ) means wind water. Wind moves the vital energy, 氣 (qì); water gathers it. The whole art is arranging a home so the good, living energy, 生氣, gathers and the harsh energy, 煞氣, is softened. It began with the siting of graves and grew into the placement of homes for the living.

Where you sit decides how a room works on you. Office feng shui arranges a desk so the day gathers behind you instead of rushing past, and it turns on one idea: the commanding position, a solid mountain, 靠山 (kào shān), at your back and an open bright hall, 明堂 (míng táng), in front. From that seat you see the door without sitting in its line, and nothing important can approach unseen.
