In feng shui a desk is read through the five phases, 五行 (wǔ xíng). Each phase owns colors: Fire red and purple, Earth yellow and brown, Metal white and gold, Water black and blue, Wood green and jade. The tradition suggests you choose the color of your favorable element. For shape, it prizes a top that curves to embrace the sitter.

The Chinese phrasing is 合理選擇辦公桌 (hé lǐ xuǎn zé bàn gōng zhuō), choosing the desk sensibly. It rests on the five phases, the moving processes that run through all of feng shui. Each phase carries a family of colors. Fire, 火 (huǒ), holds red and purple. Earth, 土 (tǔ), holds yellow, coffee, tea, and brown. Metal, 金 (jīn), holds white, gold, and silver. Water, 水 (shuǐ), holds black, blue, and gray. Wood, 木 (mù), holds green, cyan, and jade.

The old advice is to pick the color that belongs to your favorable element, so the desk you sit at agrees with the phase you carry. Older texts go on to claim these colors reach the body and mend particular organs. We drop that entirely. What remains is the symbolic correspondence, colors tied to phases, offered as tradition and taste rather than medicine.

Then there is the shape. The form the tradition prizes is a desk whose front curves inward to cradle the person who sits at it, drawing a soft arc around the body. This is spoken of as 玉帶纏腰 (yù dài chán yāo), a jade belt around the waist, the same lucky form a river makes when it wraps gently around a site. A desk that embraces its sitter is said to gather auspicious qi and hold it close, rather than letting it slip past a hard straight edge.

Ordinary sense and symbol

A little of this is plain. Color changes how a room feels to be in, and a surface that curves toward you can sit more comfortably under the arms than a sharp squared edge. Those are ordinary responses to color and shape. The five-phase system, the favorable element, and the jade belt are symbolic tradition, a coherent old language for choosing a desk, offered for reflection and not as proven effect. Nothing here promises a color or a curve will change your fortune.

How to arrange it

Start from your animal's favorable element, then let the desk lean toward that phase's family of colors, in the top, the frame, or a runner and a mat if the desk itself is fixed. A wooden desk carries Wood on its own; a white or metal-framed one carries Metal; a black glass top carries Water. For shape, favor a top that curves toward you, or soften a hard rectangle with rounded corners and a curved mat so the edge nearest your body reads as an embrace rather than a blade. Keep the surface clear, since in the tradition a cluttered desk chokes the gathering the shape is meant to invite, and, in ordinary terms, an uncluttered desk is simply easier to think at. Color and shape sit inside the larger layout, so set them once the seat itself has its wall behind and its view of the door.
