八方, eight directions
The Eight Directions
Each direction carries a trigram, an element, and a life area, and each has its own traditional cues.
The table
Direction, element, life area
- North, Water, 坎. Career. Blues and black; a water cue; metal accents feed it.
- Northeast, Earth, 艮. Knowledge. Earthy tones; ceramics, stones, books.
- East, Wood, 震. Family and health. Greens; living plants, timber.
- Southeast, Wood, 巽. Wealth. Green and purple; a vigorous plant, moving water.
- South, Fire, 離. Reputation. Reds; candles and light; keep water and mirrors away here.
- Southwest, Earth, 坤. Love. Pinks and earth tones; pairs of objects, rose quartz.
- West, Metal, 兌. Creativity. Whites and metallics; round forms.
- Northwest, Metal, 乾. Helpful people. Grays and gold; metal, spheres.
Crystals placed by area, such as citrine for wealth or rose quartz for love, are modern Western conventions rather than old canon.
