In one paragraph
A Primal Animal is the single creature you get when you combine your Western Sun sign with your Chinese zodiac year. There are twelve Sun signs and twelve year animals, so the grid holds 144 combinations, and each one is named for its own animal. Your date of birth points to exactly one cell: the month and day fix your Sun sign, the year and the lunar New Year date fix your year animal, and where those two lines cross is your Primal Animal. A Cancer born in the Year of the Snake is the Chambered Nautilus. A Cancer born in the Year of the Monkey is the Kinkajou.
Enter your date of birth in the reader above. The Oracle reads your Sun sign, reads your Chinese year animal against the real lunar New Year date for your birth year, and names your animal on the 144 grid. It is free, needs no account, and runs entirely in your browser, so your birth date is never sent anywhere.
The Chinese year does not begin on January 1. It begins at the lunar New Year, which falls between late January and the middle of February and moves a little each year. A birthday in that window can belong to the previous year's animal, so someone born on February 2 may be a Tiger or an Ox depending on the year. The Oracle carries the real New Year date for every year from 1940 to 2032 and checks your birthday against it before it names your animal.
The astronomy here is real and checkable: the Sun signs, the lunar New Year dates, the twelve-year cycle, and the Moon phase overhead. The animal grid and the readings built on top of them are a tradition of meaning, a structured way to look at yourself, not a forecast. Read your animal as a mirror you can act on rather than a fortune you wait for.

How it works
The Western zodiac follows the Sun across the year and gives you a Sun sign. The Chinese zodiac follows a twelve year cycle counted by the lunar calendar and gives you a year animal. Most people only ever learn one half. The Primal Animal is what you get when you put the two halves together.
There are twelve Sun signs and twelve year animals, so there are 144 possible combinations. Each one is named for a single creature. A Cancer born in the Year of the Snake is the Chambered Nautilus. A Cancer born in the Year of the Monkey is the Kinkajou. The animal is not a blend you have to interpret. It is the shape the two forces settle into once they stop pulling against each other.
Each reading answers five questions in order: where you stand now, what you need soon, how to plan the near season, what to be aware of, and what your highest form looks like. The last one matters most. Every animal has a version ruled by its fear and a version that has turned that fear into strength. The reading points you toward the second one.
Cancer is ruled by the Moon. The Chinese year begins on a new moon. The reading times your next moves to the Moon overhead, because a tide you can read is a tide you can move with. Your stones are charged by moonlight. The Moon is the thread that ties the two skies together.
