命位, the commanding position

The Feng Shui Bedroom

The bed holds the most important spot in a home, because it is where you rest for many hours.

The commanding position

Where to place the bed

Place the bed so that, lying down, you can see the bedroom door without being directly in line with it, often diagonally across the room. Put a solid wall and a firm headboard behind your head, spoken of as a mountain, 山, that gives backing, rather than a window or open space. Keep both sides of the bed reachable and the floor beneath it clear. Place a bed yourself and learn the position by feel.

What tradition avoids

Beams, mirrors, and the door

Avoid the feet pointing straight out the open door, sometimes called the coffin position; a footboard or a low chest can soften it. Avoid sleeping directly under an exposed beam, 橫樑壓頂, which is said to press down; shift the bed or drape the beam. Keep a mirror from reflecting you as you sleep, and lean the room toward calmer, more yin, 陰, qualities, with soft light and less clutter.

These are traditional beliefs and design preferences, not proven effects, and schools differ on whether the bed's compass facing or the solid wall behind matters more.
