Monkey and Rooster
Two of the twelve zodiac animals carry Metal as their fixed element: the Monkey (申, shēn) is yang metal, and the Rooster (酉, yǒu) is yin metal. A birth year can also add a rotating Metal on top.
The Monkey sits at 申, the yang face of Metal, clever, agile, and resourceful, the sharp tool that solves the problem. The Rooster sits at 酉, the yin face of Metal, precise, proud, and meticulous, the finished blade that gleams. Their branches also name the autumn metal months and the late-afternoon and sunset hours, 申 at three to five and 酉 at five to seven.
Years such as the Metal Monkey and the Metal Rooster layer the rotating Metal element over the animal's own, which tradition reads as intensifying the animal's metal character. Enter a birth year on the element finder to see both at once.
