大海撈針——無處下手 (dà hǎi lāo zhēn——wú chù xià shǒu) is a two-part riddle-saying (xiēhòuyǔ 歇後語). Word for word it reads "Fishing for a needle in the ocean-nowhere to start." In use it means: A task so vast and difficult that one does not even know how to begin. Equivalent to 'needle in a haystack' but with the added hopelessness of the sea's depth. You reach for it when you want that idea in one breath, and the Water note it carries is why we hand it to those born in the Year of the Snake.
