The phase of growth and spring

Wood

mù · east · spring · the virtue 仁 rén, benevolence

Wood is the phase that bends and straightens, 曲直 (qū zhí). It is the first green push of the year, growth reaching upward and outward, the young yang of spring and new life. In Chinese thought Wood is not one thing: it is a towering tree and a climbing vine at once. Meet both below.

The centrepiece · 甲 and 乙

The two woods

Every phase has a yang face and a yin face. For Wood they even carry their own names: 甲 the great tree and 乙 the grass and vine. Tap one.

Where Wood sits on the wheel

Wood never stands alone

Wood is fed by one phase, feeds another, holds a third in check, and is held by a fourth. Follow any thread to that phase.

Up to the wheel, down to your animal

Wood is a thread. Your animal is where it lands.

Up to the five phases

Wood is one turn of a larger wheel. Step back and watch all five feed and check each other.

Down to your animal

Tiger carries yang wood, Rabbit carries yin wood, and any birth year can add Wood on top. Find yours.

Meaning, not prediction. The Wood material here, including the 甲 and 乙 temperaments and the BaZi and TCM notes, is symbolic character-lore and classical tradition drawn from Chinese metaphysics. It is a lens for reflection, not a claim of fact about anyone's health, wealth, or fate. Correspondences vary by lineage. See how Wood lines up across traditions.
