命位, the commanding position

The Commanding Position

The master rule for the bed, the desk, and the main sofa, the small-scale form of the armchair.

The rule

See the door, wall at your back

Place the bed, desk, or sofa so that, seated or lying, you can see the door without being directly in line with it, often diagonally and far from it, and with a solid wall behind you. The door is where energy and opportunity enter, so facing it is being in command; seeing the entrance means you are not startled from behind; and the solid wall is the mountain at your back, the Black Tortoise, 玄武, that gives support.

Where it applies

Bed, desk, sofa

For the bed, add a solid headboard against a solid wall and keep both sides reachable. For the desk, keep a solid wall or a high-backed chair behind you and open space, the bright hall, ahead. For the main sofa, back a solid wall and face or sit diagonal to the entrance. Read the room details in the bedroom and office pages.

These are traditional and comfort ideas, not proven rules, and schools differ on facing a direction versus pointing the head toward it.
